For My Technically Advanced Friends Looking for Work as an Extra in The Atlanta Area

Mar 31, 01:49 PM -- by Chaz

UPDATE!! June 8, 2011

It turns out that Facebook is changing the way they distribute feeds. The ECA feed should be back up and running soon. All the other feeds appear to be uneffected...

 ----------------------------------------

UPDATE: June 7, 2011

It appears that the ECA RSS feed is no longer functioning! It could be an issue with the server and temporary. I am seeking work-arounds.

To that end, I will be creating a subsection of this blog. The posts from that will appear in the combined RSS feed and on the Google Reader Casting page I created. So, keep checking it and I hope I can get all the information flowing again soon!

-------------------------------------------

I originally wrote this as a Note on my Facebook page to share with some of my friends who are always looking for work as an extra here in the Atlanta Area. I post it here now for more widespread sharing…

--------------------------------------------

Sometimes getting the fresh Facebook postings from the various casting companies can be a chore-- especially if you don't want to be chained to FB all day. However getting that info while it's hot (and the job still open) can be difficult if you don't want to be chained to FB all day. Personally, I don't like the option of signing up for texts, so receiving the posts via RSS in my Google Reader, and by extension its Android app, has come in quite handy. If you would like to subscribe to any of these pages, this note's for you. If not, I've got a few things for you too...

One condition: Leave all the postings for scrawny, 6 foot tall, aging longhairs with scraggly facial hair alone. Those are mine. MINE!!

Unfortunately, as you may have noticed (probably not), FB has hidden the little RSS feed icons from the address bar in business pages. (This is at least the case when viewing the pages in HTTPS, like you should be) Nor is there a link to the RSS feed on the individual pages. Fortunately for you, you're friends with a Geek. A Geek who has learned to roll his own RSS feeds with information he found in FB's source code. So without further ado, here are the RSS feed URLs for the big ones (just plug them into your fave RSS reader's “Add Subscription” feature):

Extras Casting Atlanta (See the update at the top of the page):

http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=atom10&id=142852748793

Bill Marinella Casting:

http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=atom10&id=164213356927523

Casual Casting Atlanta:

http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=atom10&id=197476906933282

New Life Casting:

http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=atom10&id=157571877621955

And for good measure, Bill Marinella's Twitter Feed (because they actually use theirs):

http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/109672740.rss

Now, if you're a lazy bastard, here is one RSS feed for all of the above:

http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user%2F09427845484864853963%2Flabel%2FCasting

Please note: The above ‘all in one’ feed does not update as quickly as the individual feeds!!

(Yes, Cherrix Casting is missing. But seeing they only want pretty people between the ages of 18 and 25, screw 'em.)

That last one is a compilation of feeds from my Google Reader and it does not update as quickly as the individual feeds! (Non geeks can skip this paragraph) If you have an Android phone, you have a Google account. If you have a Google account start a Reader account of your own here: http://www.google.com/reader. Enter those feeds. Put them in one folder. Install the Reader app onto your phone. Put the Reader App Widget (the 'feed count notification' one) onto your home screen . When you do that you can specify which folder for it to notify you about. When new posts come in, BOOM! They on yer phone! Of course you keep your head shot on your phone (right?), so now you can do it all right there. I'm sure you can do the same with your iPhone, but I don't pay attention to that hipster-proprietary software crap.

Now, for those of you without the skills or desire to mess with RSS feeds (or the smart phone), you can still access my Google feed from this page:

http://www.google.com/reader/shared/user%2F09427845484864853963%2Flabel%2FCasting

Bookmark it. Use it. Again, it does not update as quickly as the individual feeds!!

That address is a bit much to plug into the browser of your smart phone, so at the bottom of this note I've included a QR code which will open the page and you can bookmark it from there. Use the barcode scanner on your phone. You do have the barcode scanner, right? If not, you should, you goddamn luddite. Download it now. NOW!

If you can think of any other casting companies that you think should be added to the list let me know. I'll eventually take the time to sling together a feed URL for Cherrix. If you'd like me to do a tutorial on how to create a feed for your favorite FB business page, I can do that too. Just don't expect me to hop right to it...

And as always, remember: Leave the postings for scrawny, 6 foot tall, aging longhairs with scraggly facial hair alone.

Good luck, and good hunting.

Chaz.

And now, the QR code:

  1. You ROCK! Thanks….I was going to try to create something like this myself…but you beat me to the punch..(I’m another techie…..Props…

  2. You should go ahead and do it! That page is just a ‘share’ feature in Google Reader. I’ve noticed that the lag time for those pages can be as long as 2 hours!

  3. Thanks for the info.
